Hedge Cutting and Trimming in Bedford

A hedge cut square and level changes how the whole garden reads. It is also the job most often done badly, because the shape is set by the cut before last.

We cut hedges to a line rather than by eye, taking the top level and the faces square, and tapering slightly where a hedge needs light to reach the bottom. Where a hedge has been allowed to run on we will reduce it in stages across seasons instead of taking it all off at once, which is what leaves bare panels that never fill in.

Species matters. Beech, hornbeam, privet and laurel take a hard cut and come back. Conifers such as leylandii will not reshoot from old brown wood, so once a face is cut back past the green growth it stays brown. We will say so before we start rather than after.

Timing matters too. Birds nest in hedges from around March to August, and it is an offence to damage an active nest. We check before cutting during that period, and if there is a nest in there the job waits. That is the law, not a preference.

Cuttings are cleared, raked out of the beds and borders underneath, and taken away.
